Our Mission

The Young Women Composers Camp aims to amplify the voices of young women, to allow them access to a high level of musical training, and to close the gender gap in the music composition field and create a more equitable music sector.

We strive to be accessible and inclusive to anyone who identifies as female or non-binary.

Camp Description

The Young Women Composers Camp is a two-week music festival for students who are interested in pursuing a career in music composition or a related field. Students will take courses on a broad range of compositional skills, including sessions on writing for different instrument families, song writing, and jazz composition, among others. Please visit the Camp Information page for more information on specific course listings, and to learn about our new tech track option.

The camp runs from 9am to 3:50pm, Monday through Friday. Camp activities take place on the Temple main campus, and students will spend most of their time in Presser Hall (2001 N. 13th St in Philadelphia).

Any student between the ages of 14-19 who identifies as female or non-binary is welcome to apply. Our program serves as a college preparatory program, so any student who has already completed a semester of college is ineligible for the camp regardless of age.

Final Concert

Our final concert will take place on the last day of camp, and will be a recital of student compositions. The YWCC Choir will also perform works by female composers. Students will work on their piece during the first week of camp, and will rehearse with professional musicians during the second week leading up to the performance. The performance will take place at Rock Hall (1715 N. Broad St.) and will be professionally recorded and digitally distributed to the students after the camp has ended. This free performance is open to all family, friends, and community members!

The YWCC taught me what it means to be bold, creative, and a risk taker. I am so grateful I was able to take that leap of courage with the support of the women that taught me and were with me at this camp.
